Are you overweight? Or have you ever been overweight?
I was always long, lean and muscled. Then I hit menopause and a stressful job and developed a problem with gluten. My weight went from 145 to 155 to 175 to 180. I pretty much cut out the gluten, and now it stays about 170. I don't eat junk, but I do like little pieces of dove chocolate and being a wino doesn't help things at all!
If you are overweight, what do you think is the reason FOR YOU?
stress, sedentary - not at all the way I was for 20 years, and too much wine
What do you think is the reason FOR OTHER OVERWEIGHT PEOPLE?
processed food and convenience food. I stay away from that stuff. Fruits, veggies, meats (eventually grass fed). There's a lot of hidden junk in food and genetically modified soy, corn and wheat, along with high fructose corn syrup in everything is a problem more than most people realize.
Are you on a diet at the moment?
I am looking to be more conscientious of the balance of foods I choose to eat and forcing myself to stop drinking so much wine. I don't drink soda or ice tea or anything except water.......and wine. Mostly I want to get rid of my stomach. I'm not sure if I've solved my digestion issues and it's wine that's causing the problem, or if digestion is still problematic. But I hate looking pregnant when I'm not!
What does diet mean for you?
a- Not to eat and starve myself.
b- Cutting the calories.
c- Cutting the calories plus increasing the exercise.
d- Getting all the things my body needs with less calories.
e- Getting all the things my body needs with less calories plus increasing the exercise.
f- Eating as usual but increasing the exercise.
g- Healthy life style.
h- Your own definition. Please type.
Eating what my body needs in the ways that is helpful and healthy for my body. No soy, corn, or wheat. Grass-fed beef. Organic fruits and veggies. Less dairy. A whole lot less wine. I'm doing well on the soy and corn, but I cheat on the wheat. I'm not currently able to afford the grass-fed beef and organic stuff 100% of the time. I find that eating at restaurants, and especially at other people's houses, is difficult. There's too much junk food and too much junk IN the food.
Do you expect your diet to be successful, if so why? If not why?
I'm going to have to get tough with myself. I find not wanting to do something is much easier than making myself not do something. I'd prefer to not want to drink wine than to know I have to drink less of it. Despite my busy schedule and that i don't like to work out at home, I'm going to have to make the time and deal with not being able to go to a gym. I'm way too sedentary
Have you ever managed to lose weight, but then gain again? If yes, why and how did you get back some of the weight?
I never had a weight problem. I put on some a few years ago when I had a serious sugar addiction and so I did a 4-month cleansing/eliminastion diet program. I totally cured the sugar issue. That was before i knew I had a gluten problem. So I went from 170 to 145 and then in six months I was back up to 170 again.
If you have ever succeeded to achieve your diet goals, what is it that you`ve done right?
It wasn't a diet - but that four month program was amazing. And it was very, very difficult. I was so gung ho to kick the sugar I didn't even realize that the date I chose to begin it - mid september - took me through halloween, thanksgiving, christmas and new years! I stuck with it though - but having done it once, I'm not sure i could do it again. You can't eat anywhere but your house unless you bring food with you. Restaurants mean special orders and forget going to friends...on New Years Eve I alcohol and dairy were the last holdovers, added back in only when the program finished. So no alcohol on new year's eve and every single thing on the table had dairy in it. For some reason it was the one night there didn't seem to be any chips or guacamole in sight.
Please tell us 3 tips for a successful diet. We are all ears.
1. no alcohol - especially not wine like most people drink soda!
2. learn to read labels. (did you know Planter's sunflower seeds has sugar as the second ingredient? and check out the label on that "healthy" nutella spread)
3. look for recipes that you like and get the ingredients memorized. That way you kind of have a regular shopping list of consistent items that are always around for your fave recipes. And if you hate cooking like me, make sure they're easy and quick, otherwise you'll end up eating tuna fish or a luna bar.
What are you observing in other dieters as mistakes?
Lack of awareness and rationalization. I rationalize, but I know where and when I'm doing that. One person I know says "i'm so fat, I'm so fat" and insists they know how to lose weight becuase they've done it before. But they starve themselves and then eat a bunch of stuff at night. And they eat big portions. And they have a thing for Lay's Potato CHips. Makes it kind of hard to reach your goal
Please tell us some important mistakes you did in your diets. We can learn from them.
I don't make mistakes when I'm dieting. I'm all or nothing. It's when I'm NOT dieting that I make mistakes!
If you never managed to get thin until now, why do you think? A criticizing mother? Pizza Hut?
I have always liked sweet stuff. I remember bringing a bag of Halloween candy to school for lunch in 6th grade. That's what I ate. A HUGE bag of candy. But I've never ever been fat. I've been able to eat whatever I want, as much of it as I want until about 7 years ago. I'm still looking to get back to where I was, even though it will take more discipline and awareness of choices and a much MUCH more limited menu!
How should your close ones treat you as a dieter? Should they better be quiet on the subject, or should they push you?
Leave me alone. Don't pay any attention to me. I'm a big girl and am capable of making my own choices regardless of if that's to eat a bowl of regular pasta or pass up another glass of wine.
If you are living with others, how do you handle the problem of you having special diet meals while others have their usual meals?
I don't! It makes it much much easier. WHen I'm with my boyfriend it's tough. He eats well, watches his weight, and thank goodness he's non-gluten now too. He's Italian and it used to be very difficult to avoid gluten since he always wanted macaroni or pizza. I was good about 75% of the time.
How do you cope with eating less? For some people it really hurts and is like hell. For some others, they enjoy the light feeling. How about you?
It's not a factor. I only eat when I'm hungry. Plus unless I'm at my boyfriend's house (who is a superb cook) or at a restaurant, I don't feel the need to eat. It's more like - how can I make this hunger go away and stop bothering me? So in the summer I end up eating fruit all day. Or a protein shake. I finally got off the luna bars. That was a great solution to hunger. Eat a luna bar and it went away for a few hours. Except I was eating two boxes of luna bars/week!
Could you warn us about some diet methods you got involved with that did not work?
I did that lemonade diet for two weeks the first time and two weeks the second time, but didn't finish it the third. THat's freshly squeezed lemon juice, molasses (don't do honey), red pepper and water about every 2 hours. And after three days, you can't eat. That was one of my first attempts to kick the sugar habit. I didn't really have much to lose. BUt it was hard and I don't know how Robin GIvens and some others have done it for 2 months!
Could you tell us some diet methods you got involved with that did work.
I highly recommend Isogenix which is realistic and not too difficult. One meal/day with specific shakes etc and only for two weeks. The 4 month thing I did was fabulous, but very tough. Where do you stand on the subject of exercise?
Please get me back to it! My job has prevented me from being able to do that. From the time I was in my early 20s through about 10 years ago I was a regular gym rat. In fact, in Dallas my trainer was a former Mr. Texas and I was so ripped he was trying to convince me to compete. I was counting my fat/carb/protein percentages before there were even labels on food products. These days I'm alarmed at how out of shape I am. I want the gym back and bike riding and I'd like to add yoga in there
Is there anything you`d care to say about diets?
There's no magic bullet. If you're in your 20s and need to lose 5 pounds fast so you can fit in a dress that's one thing. But if you're 15 or 20 pounds or more overweight, it needs to be a conscientious choice to change your habits. Food is engineered to be easy and yummy so you want more. Portions are ridiculously big and it's easy to eat a day's worth of calories in one meal and then you've eaten a lot of chemicals etc usually too. It takes a great deal of conscientiousness to honor your body and eat for maximum performance and health. If you get through 7 - 10 days, your body will stop craving all the crap, and when you take a bite of chocolate, you'll make a screwy face because it will taste so cloyingly sweet. Then take a day and eat like you used to and notice how you wake up feeling like a truck ran over you. It's not as obvious until you eliminate it, and then using that as a baseline, put it all back in.
